First Year Update

One year ago I moved into Unit 2 farthing Road – an older industrial unit with a small office with a warehouse that needed some attention – but it was big enough to start.
Launching a new company along with a brand that is new to Europe was exciting, slightly daunting and I must say somewhat scary. After 23+ years of being an employee and loving every minute of it, I was now alone and eager to get started and bring Drive Parts Direct Ltd to life.
Jan through to March was taken up getting myself and the company ready for launch, trying to work out warehouse space requirements for the stock coming in, setting up a location system and bring our web site and portal to life and ready for the big day!! Those months, like the rest of this year just flew by. In March the first Steigentech belt and matting stock arrived along with the Diamond Sapphire chain stock and at last I could begin trading in earnest. I am pleased to say the products we sell and the service we give have been well received and our customer base continues to grow.
I would like to thank all of you for your trust in Drive Parts Direct and our products. While saying thank you, at this point I must also thank my wife for becoming my unpaid warehouse person on a part time/weekend basis – the truth is she just wanted to spend some time with me J Well that’s my take on the situation!!
To my delight as this first year of trading draws to an end we have been able to expand our warehouse which will allow us to hold more core product stock -it’s already on order!! I am already looking ahead and planning to add more products to our existing ranges, as we continue our growth plan.
You may have already seen that we have decided to exhibit at the Drives & Controls show April 12th-14th – the UK’s leading event for Power Transmission products, here we will exhibiting Steigentech product’s along with other products from our range. We would love to meet you if you’re going to the show – along with me the vice president of the Steigentech group will also be on hand to discuss our products and services and how we can help your business grow.
I look back on this year with some degree of pride and an overwhelming feeling of excitement for 2016, along with the relief of “I’ve made it through the first year and were still here”! New staff will mean that I will be able to “leave my baby” and travel to meet customers both new, old and potential, and spread the word about the quality value for money we have to offer. And my wife will be able to get back to the housework :)
It’s been a good first year and I have loved every minute of it, I thank you all once again for your business, support and trust, and for those of you who are reading this and haven’t made the change yet, all I can ask is why not give us a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Warehouse March with first belt stock being checked.

Poly V - Multi Rib Belts

This belt category is basically a flat belt with a corrugated driving surface; ridges running longitudinally around the inside of the belt. The groove-to-groove pitch distance, groove angles, groove depth of these poly V belts comply with international standards. The common profiles are H, J, K, L, and M, being relatively thin, with a well-supported tensile member, these belts perform better than V-belts on drives with small diameter pulleys. They are particularly suited to serpentine pulley configurations and can drive flat pulleys from the backside of the belt as well which is important in serpentine drives. The low mass and high flexibility of Poly v/ribbed belts allow them to tolerate small diameter pulleys, reverse bending, high drive speed, and high speed ratios. Poly V/ribbed belts do not rely as much on the wedging action (as a v-belt) to transmit torque, and therefore tensions tend to run higher
Typical Applications
The “H” profile is used primarily in the white goods appliance sector as the drive belt for washing machines and tumble dryers. They are also found in many small electric hand tools and equipment like belt sanders and kitchen blenders. The “K” profile has been used almost exclusively in the automotive market as the prime driver for front-end accessory drives (FEAD). One belt, connected to the vehicle crankshaft will drive the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, A/C compressor, and other auxiliary equipment, such as air pumps or alternator/and the modern starter hybrids.

The “J”, “L”, and “M” belt profiles can be used on many industrial drives and can in some cases replace the Classical or Wedge belts.

Warehouse Extended Storage and New Lighting

Another eventful few weeks in the short life of Drive Parts Direct Ltd has seen us put in extra warehouse racking, a floor and new lighting as we increase our total storage area. It’s great to be out “of the dark” and “into the light” - our old lighting was somewhat tired and did need some attention, to say the least. Our new system has movement detectors and the lights come on as you approach the area/row you need to pick from, not only a lot, lot, better than the old lighting but also a lot more energy efficient.
I am delighted to report that this increase in warehouse space (earlier than originally planned) came about due to our need to be able to hold more stock of the Steigentech belting & matting product as it is proves to be a quality, value product range, and sales to the UK market continue to grow. As well as our extra space for increased core product we have now added the Steigentech PK section Poly V belts into our range – this like our J section poly V belts & metric and imperial timing belts are stocked in sleeve form that can be cut to your required widths. We have also created space to add extra sizes of the popular matting and flooring products and additional ranges will be added in the coming weeks and months.
We still have a lot of work to do in relocating some product and re organising the warehouse but I am delighted with the progress made so far and now the main “building” work has been completed I can “see the light at the end of the tunnel” and once everything is complete we will have a warehouse to be proud off.

For those of you who have purchased our products I hope you are experiencing the quality and value for money, and enjoyed the service we have given, I thank you for your custom and support and we look forward to being of service to you again in the future.

Should we always follow the crowd?

What is he going on about now, I hear you say after all he’s only selling drive belts….. Well many years ago when I was starting out in this trade (yes I do have a good memory) I learnt not to follow the crowd, look at every avenue and where ever possible always strive to be better than the rest.
Sometimes in our fast paced world it’s too easy to “follow the crowd” and replace equipment, spare parts and indeed service with the “one we used before”, this no doubt will work, but is it really what is needed and should we always follow the crowd?
Here at Drive Parts Direct our philosophy when it comes to our product offering is to give our customers the range, the quality, the price and importantly the service with an offering of product that is excellent in performance, gets the job done and doesn’t come with unnecessary costs.
I know with Steigentech we have partnered with a family owned and run company with the same beliefs as mine, simply to provide a product and service that offers true value and to have a desire to be different and stand out from the crowd.
Not many manufacturers offer the range of rubber and plastic products that Steigentech can, a range that covers - V belts, Variable Speed Belts, Double Sided V Belts, Light Duty & Dry Fractional V belts, Banded belts, Moulded ribbed Belts, Poly urethane endless timing belts, metric and imperial rubber trimming belts, Polyurethane ribbed belts. Extruded open end belting, Thermoweldable belting. Along with a matting range covers Industrial rubber sheets, rubber floor mats, flooring rolls, drainage mats, speciality rubber rolls, interlocking mats and light weight conveying belts.

Remember when your belt fails, or you need a new mat, think about what you actually need and expect in performance and cost before replacing with the same brand Think Value, Think Quality, Think Steigentech & Drive Parts Direct.

Chain Drives - What to Consider

One of the main advantages of a chain drive is its ability to perform well under varying conditions. Despite this ability there are a number of rules for good design practice which if considered early in the design process will ensure the correct chain is selected and maxim results are achieved.

Minimum Ultimate Tensile Strength: this is the static load required to break the chain. Load or tension applied to the chain in service should never exceed 1/6th of the chains Ultimate Tensile Strength. A roller chain should NEVER be loaded above 50% of its MUTS for even 1 cycle as doing so will permanently damage the chain.

Allowable Working Load: Roller chain with equal tensile strengths can have very different working load capacities, there is no constant relationship between a roller chains working capacity and its ultimate tensile strength. Certain chain manufacturers with a higher tensile strength could have a lower working load capacity.

Selecting Chain Sizes: There could be several suitable chains for any particular application, Loads, Speeds, Environment, Required service life; Costs will determine the final selection. Generally the lower cost drive will be powered by a single strand chain of the smallest pitch available to take the load required. The speed and number of teeth on the drive sprocket will also effect the selection of the chain size that is required.

As a general rule the smaller the pitch of chain the higher the operating speeds.

Measuring Your V Belt

V Belts cannot be measured by folding them in half or measuring what’s left of a snapped belt, the most accurate way to measure a belt is with a belt length gauge a tool used by most belt stockists.
However the likely hood is that when your belt fails this type of gauge will not be in your tool box the best thing to use is a simple cloth tape measure – do not use a steel tape measure.
If neither the length gauge nor cloth tape are to hand another option is to wrap string around the belt, then measure the string length.

Depending on the type of belt the most common method of belt length measurements are;

LA/LO = Length around/Length outside – where the outside length of a belt is measured with a cloth tape measure.

LI = Length Inside: The inside length is again measured with a cloth tape measure, or sometimes a piece of string.

LP = Length Pitch; Belt pitch length is normally the length at the belt pitch line. This line is generally located at the neutral axis near the cord line and varies with cross section and V Belt construction.

Getting the best from your Roller Chain

Roller chain is manufactured from highly engineered components and proper maintenance is required for users to get the maxim efficiency from the chain. You should always make regular visual inspections and carry out preventative maintenance as and when required.
Proper lubrication of a chain drive is very important and will help to give the best performance. If the chain is not properly lubricated its life will be decreased, lack of lubrication is one of the main causes of premature chain wear and failure.
Lubrication using the correctly selected/recommended lubricant is vital to minimise the wear of the chain components which have direct metal to metal contact, wear will result due to friction if not lubricated.Chain elongation can also be caused by wear between the chain pin and bush during its movement, as well as helping to prevent elongation, good lubrication cools down the chain when running at high speed and helps reduce noise while running.

V- Belts –Two Questions.

A couple of questions I am often asked are…

What are the advantages of V- belts?

  • Large range of speeds available.
  • Belt drives are less expensive than chain drives for low horsepower and low ratio applications.
  • Belts require no lubrication.
  • Single belt drives will accept more misalignment than chain drives.
  • Belt drives will cushion shock loads.
  • Belts will slip when overloaded, thus preventing damage to shafts, bearings and other machine parts.

How do they work?
V-belts transmit power by their grip on the pulley and the belt tension, the belt transmits power by friction contact between the belt and the driving and driven pulley It is therefore essential that correct tension is maintained throughout the life of the belt.
Here’s 6 tips to help you maintain tension and get the best from your V- Belt.
  • Always tension the belt to the manufactures recommended tension.
  • Check the belt tension frequently during the first 24 to 48 hours of run-in operation.
  • Maintain pulley alignment while tensioning the drive.
  • Make V-belt drive inspections periodically checking belt tension.
  • Keep all belts free from foreign material.
  • Over-tension/Under- tension of belts will lead to reduced belt and bearing life.

Thursday 29 January 2015

Looking after your V Belt…it’s more than a piece of rubber.

Many of us look at the V Belt as a fairly low cost piece of rubber that drives the expensive bits on our equipment. If the V belt fails it seems “fair game” to take the blame, being that “it’s only” a piece of rubber.
Over the years I have had many a conversation with customers whom have replaced a broken or worn belt with a new one only to find that the replacement had failed, these conversations usually started along the lines of “that bl***y belt I brought from you wasn’t any good, the flipping thing (or words similar) failed soon after I fitted it!!

I guess its human nature that when were in a hurry and the Belt has broken on our Elevator, Compressor, Lawn Mower or whatever machine, all you want is to find and fit a replacement and get going. But take a minute to ask yourself why the original belt failed in the first place? Was it simply fair wear and tear? Or was there another reason? If you fit a replacement V Belt (no matter what brand) to a worn, dirty, incorrectly tensioned or damaged drive it will fail.

10 tips to help maximize the life of your V belt;

  • Improperly tensioned belts are one of the most — if not THE most — common reason for premature belt failure. For optimum life and power transmission always follow the manufacturer’s installation and tensioning procedures.
  • Do not use a belt beyond its capacity or for an application other than specified by the equipment manufacturer, if you do premature failure may occur.
  • Do not modify a belt, its quality and performance will deteriorate.
  • Keep a clean drive. If water, oil, chemicals, or dirt stick to a belt or its pulley the power transmission capacity will decline- always make sure the drive is kept clean.
  • Make sure you select the correct belt for your application, Section, Power & Environment make a big difference …if in doubt ask.
  • Before replacing a belt, check the drive for alignment, worn or pitted pulleys, worn shafts and bearings.
  • Never Force a belt over the pulley with a screwdriver or bar, doing so will cause damage to the belt and result in premature failure.
  • Do not put weight on, or bend a belt forcibly to fit it or transport it – doing so will result in defects that will affect the life of the belt.
  • If you are storing a belt/belts do so in low humidity and a temperature range of -10C to +40C. Never expose a belt to direct sunlight.
  • If the belt is slipping, running hot, or squeaking check the tension.

I hope you have found these tips useful, don’t forget when you need a replacement belt our belt range will suit your budget and were here to help.

Who are STEIGENTECH ?

I guess many of you will be asking that question….. let me explain why Drive Parts Direct have partnered with this newname in the UK PT market place.

Steigentech stands for “rising technology” and for more than two decades the company and its brand has been established throughout Asia, Africa and the America’s -they believe in a people orientated business and have grown with this philosophy and by offering a value for money product range, they also believe that now is the right time to enter the UK market.

Some of you who know me, will know that I have strong beliefs in business relationships that are built on people, service and value for money, I believe that in partnership with Steigentech we at Drive Parts Direct will be offering an alternative product that works, products that are manufacturedto give an acceptable quality and features you would expect– but with a sensible cost that will suit your budget.

Why Steigentech?

The wealth of knowledge I have gained, over the years, has led me to recognize a market opportunity, for an affordable product range, which satisfies the vast majority of PT requirements. I have seen the factories, and have full confidence that the product is reliable, and offers great value for money.

I was also aware that customers now want the convenience of purchasing these products from the comfort of their homes, offices, or out-and-about; using PCs, laptops, tablets and phones – and they want this available to them 24/7!

With all these factors in mind, I decided to seize the moment and launch Drive Parts Direct, I believe that in Steigentech I have found the perfect “fit”.

Why not give us a try, we won’t disappoint.
